Curtana

The Sword of Mercy

Our name says it all.

Curtana is the name given to one of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. It is removed from the Tower of London only briefly at the coronation of a British king or queen, and the name itself means “short.”

In contrast with the two other ceremonial weapons — the extremely sharp Sword of Temporal Justice and the more obtuse Sword of Spiritual Justice — the Sword of Mercy symbolizes God’s unmerited goodness, that his keen justice has been cut short by keener mercy. Specifically, it serves to remind both the monarch and the subjects that all authority belongs to God, that earthly rulers have delegated power, and that godly rule requires justice to be tempered with mercy in order to reflect and approximate the Lord’s perfect reign.

Its conspicuous presence in the royal procession has even greater significance, however, when we step back long enough to make two observations. First, the short sword did not start out that way. It was once a full-size brand with a piercing point designed to do what every other flashing sword is designed to do. Not until it was severed in a fierce battle did it take its current form with a square tip. As such, it is a powerful symbol of redeemed brokenness, restored purpose, and renewed focus. Second, it did not need to be included. Executive justice is what makes for a strong and stable society, and plenty of rulers have ruled without mercy. In fact, history would suggest that mercy is an optional aspect of governing, if not a downright scarce one. That scarcity, of course, is the foundation for this entire practice. Our goal is not to draw attention to the uniqueness of the British throne but to spotlight the Source of that throne’s values — the one true God as revealed through the one true person, Jesus Christ. It’s our hope and prayer, then, to make it crystal clear to those who sit with us that God rules with merciful might and a benevolent blade and that he does so in such a way that redeems our brokenness, restores our purpose, and renews our focus. We want to help you get in on that.
